I just got back from strolling through a handful of thrift stores and purchased two different electric can openers [ Out the door at $1.99 and $3.99 ]. As time permits [and motivation] I will be attempting to use one of these to animate props. Why I think these will work: - fairly low rpm - motor strong enough to cut through metal - small enough to fit nearly anywhere - quite enough [ at least for me ] My biggest challenge had been attaching a disc to that tiny metal eating gear and I have decided to use the product 'JB Weld'. My intentions are to attach a flat round metal disc centered onto the gear with epoxy. This disc will have several holes with the next one further from the center. The holes will allow me to adjust the crank which will bolted into the hole. I intend to bolt down the push down lever so that it will run continuously and add a motion detector sensor to interupt the power as there is a major concern of burning out the motor should it run for longer then designed. Any other suggestions for attaching to the the metal eating gear? I'm open to other materials besides metal. Email me your thoughts. |
